Styling Shoulder-Length Hair: Straight with Volume

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I have been STRUGGLING with styling my hair ever since I cut it short. I had originally cut 4-ish inches off, but then went back and got 6 more off, SO it’s safe to say that’s a bunch of hair. It has now been a decent amount of time since I made this drastic change to my hair, I have finally gotten the hang of styling this shoulder length hair of mine. Thanks to my trusty sidekicks, over the next couple of weeks I’ll be sharing these tutorials on how I style my hair so that you too, can get the hang of styling your shoulder length hair!

No matter what I do to my hair, I always start off by washing it. GASP! Yes, I wash my hair every day. I rotate through a couple of different shampoos and conditioners but my go-tos are Kristin Ess’ The One Signature Shampoo & conditioner and Pantene’s Pro-V Repair and Protect Shampoo & conditioner. For this post, I used the Pantene shampoo.

After I towel dry my hair, I apply Alterna’s Caviar CC Cream evenly throughout my hair before blow drying it. If you’ve never used this leave in conditioner, it does WONDERS. Not only does it protect your hair from heat products, but it also leaves your hair shiny, smooth, and soft. A win-win if you ask me. I will then blow dry my hair so I can get styling. There’s no real science to it, I typically get my roots dry-isa then flip my hair over and blow dry it upside down.

Once my hair is dry (I use this blow dryer) , I plug in my ghd straightener (c/o) and get straightening. When I straighten it, I typically run the straightener through my hair rather quickly, especially because I’m not aiming for a sleek, pin straight look. If you’re like me and have longer bangs but they straightener weird, my tip is to forget that they’re bangs. Style them like you did the rest of your hair and they will fall into place.

Now the fun part! The products. When I straightener my hair, I like to use the Drybar Triple Sec 3-in-1 spray and Living Proof’s Full Dry Volume Blast to get the texture and volume I’m looking for. These products also do a FABULOUS job of giving your hair that “messy” cool look that is oh-so popular. When using these products, I separate my hair into sections, shake the spray bottle, and spray my roots.

The TRIPLE SEC is awesome because you can continuously build on it depending on how much texture you want. But beware, the volumizing blast gives you so much volume the first time, so be careful you don’t over do it! After spraying each product in my hair, I like to give it a shake and move it around with my fingers so it can work it’s way into my roots to get it going.

Can I admit that I’ve always been envious of your hair? Every time I saw your hair on Snapchat I was super jealous. My hair is super super fine and thin, very straight, and very unhealthy, and so it can look totally flat and stringy, which is no fun at all. I gotta get my hands on some of these products to get that volume you rock so well!
