I’ve always had a difficult time finding the motivation to get up and get shit done, I’d honestly rather lay in bed all day and watch Netflix and I’m not lying when I tell you that I wake up every morning and tell myself that “I need to get my shit together today,” which rarely ever happens. There are also the days that have so much motivation to get stuff done that I run out of things to do in a very short amount of time so I search high and low for other random things to do to fill my time. So how to I find motivation when all I want to do is be lazy? I try a lot of different things, but these seem to help the most:
Set Goals | I love setting goals, not not just love but love. There’s no better feeling than setting your mind to something and achieving it, it’s an even better feeling than crossing something off your to-do list. Throughout the week I set mini-goals that I want to accomplish within that week and give myself a “deadline.” These mini-goals help me focus on that task at hand. Try setting one or two goals for yourself for the day or the week, it will help you focus on those tasks at hand without getting overwhelmed with the never-ending list of things you also need to get done that week.
Find Inspiration | For me, motivation and inspiration go hand-in-hand. In order to be motivated, you must first find inspiration, and to be inspired, you must be motivated to find that inspiration. I find a lot of my inspiration in magazines, on Pinterest (of course), and on various other websites that are aimed towards college-aged women.
Create Excitement and Anticipation | I like to trick my mind into thinking I’m doing something awesome. I’ll find a reason that I’m excited to do a specific homework assignment, set my mind to it, then I’m actually excited to not only do the assignment, but get it done. And who doesn’t want to commit to giving themselves a present if they finish something on time? I currently have a chocolate bar waiting for me to post this blog post.
Commit Publicly | I hate looking bad, and like a failure, so when I commit to something publicly, say going for a run every morning, I have more motivation to get it done so that I look like a go-getter. Tell your friends what your goals are, update them on what you’re doing, and I’m sure you’ll find the motivation to complete the task!
Ask for Help | If you’re not motivated to get things done, ask one of your friends (or in my case ask Cathleen) to motivate you to get some work done. There’s nothing better than some kind word from your besties to get your ass in gear.
Squash the Negative Thoughts | The more you treat the task at hand as a negative task, the more it becomes negative and the less you want to work on it. Find the positive side to everything you do, say, or think, and the positivity will follow. Your work will be completed quicker, your life will be filled with positive people and positive vibes, and you’ll be an overall happier person!
