5 Tips for Stepping Up Your Instagram Game

Instagram is one of the most interesting, hands on, complex, and beautiful social media platforms out there, and if you utilize it correctly as a blogger, you can connect with people from all over the world, drive traffic to your blog, and learn a new trick or two along the way. Over the last year, I’ve really made it a point to learn as much about Instagram as I could in order to really step up my own Instagram game. I’ve taken e-courses, webinars, done extensive research, and played around with numerous photo editing apps, props, and even looked at the technical side of the platform.

Figuring out what works for you on Instagram will take a lot of trial and error. What works for someone else might not work for you. Different types of bloggers and different types of content brings in all different types of audiences, so don’t compare your Instagram account to more successful ones out there. Today, I’m going to share with you some tips to really step up your Instagram game, no matter what you do, what your audience is, and what “niche” you are in and overall, kick some Instagram booty.

5 Tips for Stepping Up Your Instagram Game

Back before you started your small business or started your blog, you might have had an Instagram account and laughed at the people who used hashtags in their personal photos. But, as a blogger, creative biz owner, life coach, whatever you are, hashtags make a huge difference. By using hashtags in your photo’s captions as well as entering your favorite concoction of hashtags in the first comment on the photo, you are allowing your photo to be searched. Many times bloggers and other creatives will search for a specific hashtag to check out the photos that people have used that hashtag on (is any of this making sense??). This allows other accounts to find your photos and your account, increasing your chances of driving traffic to your blog, comments to be made on your photos, and even more followers!

Engaging with other accounts is one of the most important tips I could give you. There are all different types of ways to engage with other accounts from asking engaging questions in your photos caption, “liking” other photos, or commenting on other accounts. There is nothing worse than having followers that don’t engage with you so don’t be that person that doesn’t engage with other accounts and with their followers. Also, when your followers/readers are more engaged, brands and companies will notice.

Okay, so this is probably something you hear all the time. Whether you take it as “post consistently” or have a “consistent theme,” it doesn’t matter – but be consistent. I can’t get this point across enough. If you’re posting on Instagram on a consistent schedule and having a consistent theme to your photos, you will gain more engagement and followers than someone who only posts once a week. Your followers want to know what to expect from you and when.

Following accounts that inspire you will really allow for your creative light bulb to turn on. In a blogging rut? Don’t know what to post photos of? Having a hard time coming up with captions for your photos? Follow new accounts that inspire you and go through the ones you already follow for a little bit of inspiration to get you going.

I feel like this really isn’t a tip, but more common knowledge. There is nothing worse than seeing someone comment on your photos “f4f?” It’s not only annoying, but you don’t want to have to ask people to follow your account. You should want organic followers – followers that you don’t pay for, don’t ask to follow you, and followers that actually want to follow you. Organic followers are the ones that will engage with you and that you’ll want to engage with, too!
