Summer Makeup Routine

I have a very basic make up routine no matter what I’m doing. The same makeup foundation, the same brushes, the same blush – you get the point. So this summer I decided it was time to switch it up and to be kind to my skin while I did so.

Summer Makeup Routine

No matter what I have planned for the day, I always start by applying the COOLA sport continuous spray SPF 30 to my face, shoulders, and chest to keep myself protected from any harmful damage from the sun. I love the fresh cucumber scent, especially when I’m applying it with my makeup and not just for enjoying the outdoors. Besides the scent and the dry feeling of the sunscreen, I absolutely love that it is cruelty free and made from certified organic ingredients!

The next step I take is filling in my eye brows (I use this pencil from Target!), curl my eyelashes, and apply mascara. Depending on what I have planned for the day depends on whether or not I wear eyeshadow. If I’m going to be lounging around outside, I’ll opt for just mascara (same with when I don’t leave my house!). If I have errands to do or appointments to get to, I’ll usually use my Naked2 palette.

Once my eyes/eyebrows are complete comes all the fun of “painting my face.” Again, depending on what I’m doing really depends on what my face makeup routine is but for purposes of this post, I’ll let you know what I do on the day-to-day and when I have longer days.

Summer Makeup Routine

I had been using my bareSkin serum foundation (which also contains SPF!) as my regular day-to-day foundation but I found that it was a little to heavy for my skin when I was getting ready for the day after being outside. I decided to give BB cream a try and although I didn’t like it at first, I have really grown to like it.

Since the BB cream I use not super heavy, some days I do have to apply a little concealer to hide any red marks or tired eyes. Once I have covered my whole face, I’ll sweep a little bit of finishing powder across my face out for a (you guessed it!) more finished, put together look. I do still use my bareMinerals foundation on the days I know I have a long day ahead of me so I don’t have to worry about re-applying makeup.

And the final steps – highlighter, blush, and lip.

I never thought I’d be able to use a highlighter since I’m not very makeup literate, but when I received the Marc Jacobs glow stick in the mail, I decided to give it a try and it was much easier to use than I anticipated! I typically apply it at the tops of my cheek bones, temples, and brow bones by just dabbing a little bit on my finger and to the desired area. I will then sweep my brush across the stick and blend with that.

I will occasionally use bronzer and typically just steal my mom’s bronzer from her before applying my blush. I go between this NYC one for a more bronzed look and my favorite Tarte cheek color for more long lasting pink tones.

Deciding on a lip color is always exciting and I’m a sucker for a good lipstick, but in the summer my lips get so dry, cracked, and damage from the sun so I typically opt for something with SPF in it. I’ve found myself picking up the COOLA liplux in Nude Beach time and time again, even when I’m just lounging around my house. The nude color is perfect and it is SPF 30!

Do you have a specific summer makeup routine or do you have specific products you rotate through (like me)? Let me know in the comments below if you liked this post and whether you’d like to see a tutorial in the future!

I don’t have a Naked palette but I’m considering finally buying one next week. I just can’t decide which one!

I love using BB creams or bare minerals in the summer. They’re light and non-fussy.

It’s also nice to have products that are light weight so you don’t feel as guilty if you need to reapply!
